Phase 10: KDE Known Limitations Remediation
Version: v0.23.0 | Date: March 2026 | Status: COMPLETE
Overview
Phase 10 systematically addresses the known limitations identified during Phase 9's KDE porting work. Across 11 sprints, this phase resolves 22 of 29 documented limitations by adding missing kernel modules, userland daemons, and hardware abstraction layers. The effort produced 106 changed files and approximately 34,000 lines of new code.
Key Deliverables
- Rendering performance: Per-surface damage tracking with greedy rectangle merging and TSC-based software VSync at 16.6ms intervals
- Audio: PipeWire daemon with ALSA bridge and PulseAudio compatibility layer
- Networking: NetworkManager D-Bus daemon supporting Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and DNS
- Bluetooth: BlueZ D-Bus daemon with HCI bridge and Secure Simple Pairing
- XWayland enhancements: GLX-over-EGL translation (21 functions), DRI3 GBM buffer allocation, XIM-to-text-input-v3 input method bridge
- Power management: ACPI S3/S4/S5 suspend and hibernate, DPMS display power control, CPU frequency scaling with 3 governors (performance, powersave, ondemand)
- KDE features: KRunner with 6 search runners, Baloo file indexer using trigram search, Activities manager (16 maximum concurrent activities)
- Hardware support: USB hotplug via xHCI PORTSC polling, udev daemon with libudev shim, V4L2 video capture (12 ioctls, SMPTE color bar test pattern), multi-monitor support for up to 8 displays
- Session management: Akonadi PIM data server integration
- Performance optimization: KSM (Kernel Same-page Merging) with FNV-1a hashing, D-Bus message batching, lazy KF6 plugin loading, parallel daemon startup
Technical Highlights
- 13 new kernel modules: damage_tracking, vsync_sw, multi_output, hotplug, v4l2, ksm, netlink, session, acpi_pm, dpms, cpufreq, sysfs, device_node
- 5 new userland directories:
pipewire/,networkmanager/,bluez/,udev/,akonadi/ - 9 sysfs virtual files exposed for userland hardware queries
- KSM page merging reduces memory usage for processes with identical pages by hashing page contents and mapping duplicates to shared copy-on-write frames
